🚀 Getting Started

What is WasteLocate?

WasteLocate is a UK-wide platform that connects waste producers with permitted disposal facilities. We provide a searchable database of EWC (European Waste Catalogue) codes and match them with licensed facilities that can accept those waste types.

Our service simplifies the process of finding compliant waste disposal routes, saving you time and ensuring environmental compliance.

Do I need to create an account to use WasteLocate?

You can browse EWC codes without an account, but to view full facility details (contact information, pricing, capacity), you need to sign up. We offer:

  • Free Account: 1 free facility search
  • Pay-As-You-Go: £10 for 5 searches
  • Pro Plans: Unlimited searches from £10/month
How do I search for a facility?

It's simple! Just follow these three steps:

  1. Select Chapter: Choose the origin of your waste (e.g., construction, chemical processes)
  2. Select Subchapter: Pick the specific process that generates the waste
  3. Select Code: Choose the exact waste type and classification

After selecting your EWC code, enter your postcode (optional) to find the nearest facilities. Click "Search Permitted Facilities" to see results.

📋 EWC Codes & Waste Classification

What is an EWC code?

EWC stands for European Waste Catalogue. It's a standardized classification system used across the UK and Europe to categorize different types of waste. Each code is a 6-digit number (e.g., 17 01 01 for concrete).

EWC codes help ensure waste is properly identified, handled, and disposed of according to environmental regulations.

How do I know if my waste is hazardous?

WasteLocate clearly identifies hazardous waste codes with markers like MH (Mirror Hazardous) or AH (Absolute Hazardous). When you select a code, we'll display whether it's classified as hazardous or non-hazardous.

Important: For accurate waste classification, always consult the official WM3 Technical Guidance . WasteLocate is an information tool only and does not provide classification services.

What if I'm not sure which EWC code to choose?

If you're unsure about waste classification, we recommend:

  • Consulting the WM3 guidance document
  • Speaking with an environmental consultant
  • Contacting your waste contractor for advice
  • Reaching out to the Environment Agency for clarification

Never guess! Incorrect waste classification can lead to serious legal consequences and environmental harm.

🏭 Facilities & Permits

Are all facilities in your database permitted?

Yes! We only list facilities that are permitted and authorized by the Environment Agency or equivalent regulatory bodies in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

However: You should always verify a facility's current permit status independently before engaging their services. Permits can be revoked, suspended, or modified, and it's your legal responsibility under Duty of Care to ensure facilities are appropriately authorized.

How do I verify a facility's permit?

You can verify permits through:

  • Environment Agency: Check the public register
  • Direct Contact: Request a copy of the permit from the facility
  • Permit Number: WasteLocate displays permit numbers for easy verification

Always confirm that the facility's permit specifically authorizes the waste code and quantities you're disposing of.

What if no facilities appear for my waste code?

If your search returns no results, it could mean:

  • No facilities in our database currently accept that specific waste code
  • The waste type requires specialist handling not yet listed
  • You may need to contact facilities directly for hazardous or unusual wastes

We're constantly adding new facilities to our database. Try:

  • Broadening your search by postcode range
  • Contacting the Environment Agency for facility recommendations
  • Reaching out to specialist waste contractors in your area
